BOD members place first bets at Sportsbook

The Tulalip Gaming Organization held the soft opening for their new sports betting venue, Sportsbook, on the afternoon of September 6. In partnership with Draft Kings, Tulalip is bringing Sportsbook to both of their gambling establishments at the Tulalip Resort Casino and the Quil Ceda Creek Casino. 

“Sports betting is new to Washington,” explained Sportsbook Supervisor Paola Hurtado. “I know there are several casinos that have opened but we are with Draft Kings. Draft Kings have different odds and there are different options of wagering. With us, you are able to bet on a lot of type of sports. Right now, we have MLB, NBA, WNBA, MLS, MMA, fights, and many more. Our guests are really excited for sports betting, now they don’t have to drive all the way out to Angels of the Wind or Snoqualmie, all they have to do is drive up the road.”

Sportsbook features a ginormous tv screen that can play multiple games, matches, and competitions in real time. Bettors can grab a seat in one of the venues comfy recliners and follow the results of their wagers live. 

Placing the very first bets at Sportsbook were none other than Tulalip BOD members Hazen Shopbell and Marie Zackuse, as well as Chairwoman Teri Gobin. 

Said Teri, “I bet on the Seahawks for $10, the Mariners for $100, and the Storm for $100. It’s really exciting that we are finally opening up our sports betting venue, both here (TRC) and at the Q. We have this big screen, it’s one of the largest in Washington State at this time, and we’re really excited. This has been a long time coming and it’s with one of the premier sports betting organizations in the United States. Our partnership with Draft Kings is really good and is what is really key to what is going to make this a success.”

The kiosks at Sportbook will be available 24/7 following the venue’s grand opening, which is tentatively scheduled for September 20. And according to Chairwoman Gobin there may or may not be some big stars in attendance to help celebrate the grand opening with the people. 

“We were a little slow to get ours up and running, but we wanted to do it the Tulalip way and make it a grand event,” Teri expressed. “I’m so excited and can’t wait for everybody to try it out.”

Wayne Brady looks forward to bringing improv to Tulalip

TULALIP — The closest Wayne Brady has been to the Tulalip Resort Hotel and Casino is Seattle, but he told The Marysville Globe and The Arlington Times that he’s eager to try out a new venue.

“I’ll go wherever the audience is, from Manhattan to small towns,” Brady said, as he looked forward his two showings on March 29 in the Orca Ballroom. “And this won’t necessarily be the last time I’ll be here, either.”

Although Brady’s work in the entertainment industry ranges from starring roles in Broadway musicals to guest-starring parts on scripted TV shows and voiceover work for cartoons, many people probably know him best from his long-running  stint as part of the cast on the improvisational comedy show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” which will be returning with new episodes later this year. However, Brady has never seen such high-profile jobs as the end goal of his career, because throughout the rest of his hectic schedule he’s always found time to stay on the road.

“There are stand-ups who land those sitcom gigs because that’s what they were aiming for, but I’ve never stopped performing live,” Brady said. “It’s how I’ve stayed sharp. No matter what I’ve done, whether it was ‘Chicago’ or ‘Let’s Make a Deal,’ it would have suffered if I hadn’t kept doing that.”

According to Brady, he thrives on contact with live audiences, and described the sense of immediacy in their interactions as difficult to duplicate even in live television.

“There’s just this rush of instant reaction,” Brady said. “If you’re doing comedy onstage, you don’t have to wait for a critical review or a Nielsen rating. The club or theater or whatever the venue is will let you know, yea or nay, how they think you’re doing. It can be through a hush in the crowd or in the rattling of drinks, or more positive affirmation if you’re doing good. Either way, you get that feedback right away.”

Brady sees the challenges of live performance as akin to the enjoyable challenges that he feels everyone should choose to take on, regardless of their professions.

“The joy of live performance is that it’s live,” Brady said. “Nothing can replace it. Not everyone can do live performances, but we should all challenge ourselves, whether at work or in our lives.”

While Brady promised his Tulalip audiences that he would arrive fully engaged, he requested that they return the favor.

“I’m happy to come out here and bring my A-game, but I’d only ask that those who come out to see me do the same with their suggestions,” Brady said. “I’m going to challenge you guys too. This isn’t just going to be a show where you sit back and put your feet up. It’s improv, so you need to be ready for me to do anything, even if it means coming out into the crowd and interacting with you.”

Margaret Cho bringing new stand-up work ‘Mother’ to Tulalip

Margaret Cho is at it again! The Grammy-nominated comedienne has created a new production called ‘Mother’ and will unveil it during a brief 10-date tour, including a February 15 performance at Tulalip Resort Casino.

The freshly assembled show is said to be the comedy/TV star’s edgiest work ever, as it will give audiences an untraditional look at motherhood and an insight into maternal figures and strong women in Queer culture. It will also include laugh-out-loud examinations of race, sexuality, celebrities, politics, social culture, and everything in between. If you’ve seen Cho live before, you know that nothing is off limits.

Cho received a Grammy nomination recently for her recording Cho Dependent: Live in Concert, in the category of Best Comedy Album. She’s also a cast member of the TV sitcom Drop Dead Diva and will appear in an upcoming film titled Wedding Palace. A longtime supporter of the LGBT community and an open Bisexual, she’s performed at numerous Gay Pride celebrations around the world, aside from joining Cyndi Lauper’s ‘True Colors’ tour several years back.

Tickets for Cho’s show at Tulalip go on sale December 14 at www.tulalipresort.com (packages including accommodations and buffet brunch are also available). There is no direct shuttle service from downtown Seattle to the resort, but you can take the Bellair Charter (www.airporter.com) from Sea-Tac Airport to the casino and stay overnight, then return the next morning. Individual tickets are priced at $40.

Look for Cho to appear on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson on January 10 and The Ricki Lake Show in mid-January.
