Hagar to rock at Tulalip, other big names coming

August is a busy month during the Summer Concert Series at the Tulalip Amphitheatre.

Up next is the Sammy Hagar concert on Thursday, Aug. 14. Tickets start at about $55 for the standing-room-only beer garden. It’s one of Tulalip’s most popular concerts this season. Earlier this week, the show was just about sold out.

The next day, Aug. 15, Tulalip hosts Sugar Ray, Gin Blossoms, Blues Traveler and Uncle Kracker. Tickets start at about $39, also in the SRO beer section. On Aug. 21, the 1970s band “Yes” plays the amphitheatre, with similar ticket prices.

Singer and songwriter Hagar, 66, will be joined in the show, “A Journey Through the History of Rock,” by bassist Michael Anthony, drummer Jason Bonham and guitarist Vic Johnson. Anthony, another Van Halen alum, plays with Hagar in the band Chickenfoot and guitarist Johnson plays with Hagar in the group Wabos. Bonham is the son of Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham.

The former front man of Van Halen and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Hagar was a young man when he “burst on the scene from San Francisco as the lead vocalist of Montrose, whose song ‘Rock Candy’ has gone on to become a certified rock class,” according to Hagar’s website.

After a bunch of solo albums and cross-country tours, Hagar, known as the Red Rocker, joined Van Halen in 1985.

Later he performed with his band the Wabos, enjoyed a 2004 reunion tour with Van Halen and now plays primarily with his current band Chickenfoot, which also includes guitarist Joe Satriani and drummer Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers fame.

Hagar’s fans, known as “Redheads,” can expect a variety of tunes from the rocker on Thursday.

A set from a stop on the current tour included the songs “There’s Only One Way to Rock,” “Rock Candy,” “Good Times Bad Times,” “I Can’t Drive 55,” “Whole Lotta Love,” “Moby Dick,” “Best of Both Worlds,” “Right Now” and “Rock and Roll.”

Along with his music, Hagar is known for raising money to benefit charities in the cities where he performs. Hagar plans to donate a portion of proceeds from the show to the Tulalip Food Bank.

National Night Out Draws Large Crowd

Tulalip and Marysville Police Departments partnered with Snohomish County Sheriff’s Department to host the Annual National Night Out held at the Tulalip Amphitheater at the Tulalip Resort Casino on Tuesday, August 5.

The national event brings together law enforcement, local organizations, and community members to strengthen relationships to promote crime prevention, while educating community members about crime prevention methods, such as neighborhood watches and citizen patrols.

Traditionally Tulalip Police and Marysville Police Departments have split hosting duties, each taking a turn hosting the event in their respective cities. As this year’s host Tulalip invited local service organizations such as Snohomish County Volunteer Search and Rescue, Tulalip Bay Fire Department, Tulalip Behavioral Health, Medical Reserve Corps, Tulalip Legacy of Healing and others, to participate in the national event that celebrated its 31st anniversary this year.

An estimated 250 community members from the Tulalip/Marysville area attended the event and were able to ask questions about crime prevention and gain crime prevention awareness resources. In addition, were two K9 unit demonstrations that enabled participants to learn how K9 officers search and find drugs.

“Last night’s National Night Out against crime was a success,” Ashlynn Danielson with the Tulalip Police Department. “Events like this one bring together community members and law enforcement to promote crime prevention. We received positive feedback from participants.”

Due to the success of this year’s National Night Out event, Tulalip Police Chief Carlos Echevarria is considering planning an annual Tulalip Community National Night Out.

TULALIP – Tulalip Police Department is partnering with Marysville Police Department once again to host the National Night Out for the Tulalip/ Marysville communities.

This year marks the 31st anniversary for the national event, which seeks to bring community members and law enforcement agencies together to strengthen relationships to promote crime prevention.

Over the years the Tulalip Police and Marysville Police have alternated hosting the event. This year Tulalip Police are hosting at the Tulalip Amphitheatre at the Tulalip Resort Casino, tonight at 6 p.m.

Representative from local organizations are joining Tulalip and Marysville Police Departments, in addition to Snohomish County Sheriff’s Department, to answer community questions about crime prevention and provide crime prevention awareness resources.

The event will feature fun activities for the family, along with food and a raffle.

National Night Out is held annually on the first Tuesday of August and is coordinated by the non-profit organization, National Association of Town Watch.  The event involves over 35 million people across 16,124 communities in the nation with a goal to increase awareness, strengthen community relations and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back against crime.

Etheridge to visit Tulalip venue Sunday

Folk rock musician Melissa Etheridge will perform Sunday at the Tulalip Amphitheatre.

Etheridge released her debut, self-titled album in 1988, but gained fame withher fourth album “Yes I Am” in 1993, including hits “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window.”

She is also a notable activist for gay and lesbian rights.

The show starts at 7 p.m., doors open at 5 p.m.

You must be 21 or older to attend. Tickets start at $25, available at www.ticketmaster.com.

Next up is Foreigner on Aug. 25 and the Doobie Brothers and America on Sept. 7.

Tickets start at $30 for these shows.

Spike and the Impalers return to Tulalip

Music is coming back to the Tulalip Amphitheatre, with the venue’s summer concert series kicking off with a return visit by Spike and the Impalers.

The group, which will play at 8 p.m. Friday, has been a staple in the venue’s summer lineup for years.

The group, led by 95.7 KJR morning show hosts Spike O’Neill and Bob Rivers, is basically a cover band, playing hits from AC/DC to ZZ Top.

Fans of classic rock also may be headed to Woodinville’s Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery, where the Steve Miller Band will play a sold-out show at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Steve Miller, who turns 70 this year, has been a touchstone on classic rock radio for decades. His hits in the 1970s included “The Joker,” “Jet Airliner” and “Rock ‘N Me.”

All of those tracks are included on the singer’s “Greatest Hits 1974-78,” which remains a top seller to this day.

Tickets are sold out but can be found at a markup at stubhub.com.

A longer drive will give fans a chance to see some bigger shows, as the White River Amphitheatre in Auburn hosts a pair of shows.

The Last Summer on Earth tour will bring the Barenaked Ladies and Ben Folds Five to the amphitheatre at 7 p.m. Saturday. Both acts boast loyal followings and have found a home on adult contemporary radio.

The Barenaked Ladies’ geek-friendly take on alt-rock helped it score a string of hits around the turn of the century, including the hits “One Week” and “Brian Wilson.” The group released a new album, “Grinning Streak,” earlier this month.

Ben Folds Five, meanwhile, broke up in 2000, only to reform for a new album in 2012. Warmly embraced by fans, “The Sound of the Life of the Mind” found the group falling back into step with its piano-pounding sound.

Guster, the alt-pop band, will open the show.

Then, the amphitheatre will draw a very different kind of crowd, as it hosts the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

The annual hard rock festival will feature headliners Rob Zombie and Mastodon.

Rob Zombie acts as the elder statesman of the group. The campy singer — who also has directed horror flicks like “House of 1000 Corpses” — is touring behind his new album, “Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor,” which hit No. 7 on the charts.

Despite his bluster, Zombie is a mainstream act. Mastodon, meanwhile, boasts some indie cred. The metal act, a favorite of taste-making websites like Pitchfork.com, cracked the top 10 with its 2011 album, “The Hunter,” and may road test some new material during the concert.

Finally, Bellevue’s own Queensryche will play the Moore Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Bellevue act, again featuring original vocalist Geoff Tate, is touring behind its new album, “Frequency Unknown.”
