TULALIP – The Hibulb Cultural Center & Natural History Preserve will be featuring a variety of works by Tulalip artists in a new exhibit, Coast Salish Inheritance: Celebrating Artistic Innovation.

Opening November 16 and running through May 2014, the exhibit will feature a unique variety of traditional and contemporary art from Tulalip artists.

A collaborative effort between museum staff and Tulalip artists during the museum’s summer exhibit, Ramp if Up! Skateboarding Culture in Native America was the inspiration behind this exhibit.

“Our goal is to showcase the artists and talents we have right here,” said museum curator of collections, Tessa Campbell.

Works of art in a variety of mediums will be featured. Traditional pieces include cedar carving and weaving, sculpture, beadwork, and dream catcher weaving. Contemporary art will include mixed media, photography, painting, drawing, and musical composition.

Featured artists include Frank Madison, Tryone Patkoski, Steven Madison, Mike Dunn, Sr. Aaron Jones, Marie Moses, Michelle Myles, Judy Gobin, Ty Juvinel, Herman Williams, Sr. Kaiser Moses, Charlotte Williams, Shannon Edwards Pablo, David Spencer, Sr. Derek Jones, Virginia Jones, James Madison, and Katrina Lane and many more.

“Every artist is different, so in this display we wanted to showcase the unique variety of traditional Coast Salish art and modern abstract contemporary art that our artists are creating. This is a gallery of our artists, for our artists,” said museum public relations coordinator, Mytyl Hernandez.

Restoring 400 acres of estuary land is not a mediocre task and has required years of dedication from many groups. The complexity of the restoration project has spanned fourteen years and is nearing completion. With just over a year left in the project the, the final stage is to  lower the southern levee and remove the tide gate.

The tide gate and levee drain the fresh water from the land and prevent any water from flowing back into the estuary. With the completion this winter of the setback levee on the western side, the southern levee, which runs along the northern edge of Ebey Slough, will be breached and the tide gate removed allowing the saline and fresh water to mix.

The Tulalip Tribes, along with the City of Marysville, Army Corps of Engineers, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, Washington State Department of Ecology, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service have collaborated on this project and representatives were invited along with local and state politicians to view the progress that has been made.

Visitors were led into the estuary and taken on a brief walk to view the channel opening. Afterwards they were invited to the Hibulb Cultural Center for lunch and a discussion the estuary project in its final stage.

The restoration’s completion is expected to increase the salmon and migratory bird population and bolster the native vegetation in the area.

Hibulb celebrates its second year

Donations to benefit the Natural History Preserve

Tulalip − For the second year the Hibulb Cultural Center in Tulalip held an open house for the anniversary celebration Saturday, August 17th. After a 20 year dream, and more than ten years of planning, the long awaited museum opened in 2011. This year, the emphasis of the anniversary was funding the Hibulb natural history preserve.

“We are not a profit driven operation. In fact we make very little money. Most of the museum operations are funded from donations or through grants, instead of tribal hard dollars,” explained Mytyl Hernandez, Hibulb’s marketing and membership manager.

Attendees could wander through the vendors or sit in on any number of cultural seminars held throughout the day. The museum had items for sale in the seminars as well, and held a raffle for Hibulb merchandise.

The day’s events began by remembering the late Henry “Hank” Gobin, former museum director, who passed away earlier this year. The completion of Tulalip’s own natural history preserve was his dream since he began his work in revitalizing the culture at Tulalip.

Celebrating Two Years of Accomplishments

Tulalip Hibulb Cultural Center is celebrating two years of sharing Coast Salish culture and highlighting the stories, people, art and history of Tulalip.

Saturday, August 17, 10 am to 5pm. Included in the activities are carving, beading and flute music demonstrations, storytelling, craft activities, a salmon lunch and a special performance by the Tulalip Lushootseed Language Camp students.

“Ramp It Up” examines the role of indigenous peoples in skateboarding culture, its roots in ancient Hawaiian surfing and the visionary acheivements of contemporary Native skaters.

Skateboarding combines demanding physical exertion, design, graphic art, filmmaking and music to produce a unique and dynamic culture while illustrating how indigenous people and tribal communities have used skateboarding to express themselves and educate their youth.

“Skate culture is a great lens to learn about both traditional and contemporary Native American culture,” said Betsy Gordon, curator of “Ramp It Up.” “This exhibition not only showcases the Native skater, but also the Native elders, parents, government officials and community activists, who have encouraged their kids to skate.”

Smithsonian Connection

The exhibit was organized by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian and circulated by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.

“Ramp It Up: Skateboard Culture in America” was previously on view at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in New York as well as at the National Museum of American Indian in Washington, D.C.

Indians 101: Tulalip Canoes (Photo Diary)

For the Salish-speaking tribes of the Washington coast, canoes were traditionally not only their most important form of transportation, they were also cultural icons. The Hibulb Cultural Center and Natural History Preserve honors the Tulalip (Snohomish, Snoqualmie, Skykomish, and others) cultures.

The importance of canoes to the Tulalip peoples is evident in the Hibulb Culture Center. The canoe theme shown in the windows above is repeated throughout the Center.

Canoes were made by hollowing out a single log with fire and adzes. By filling the hollowed out log with hot water, the canoe makers could then widen the canoe by forcing stout cross-pieces between the gunwales.

Carving a canoe begins with spiritual preparation: the carvers must prepare themselves with fasting, prayers, and the sweatlodge. It is not uncommon for the task of carving a large canoe to take two years. Once the log is chosen, a prayer is said for the cedar and an offering is given to thank it for its sacrifice.

The final stage in carving the canoe involves the use of hot rocks and water to steam-bend the sides outwards. This steaming also draws the bow and stern upwards as well as adding strength to the vessel. For the large ocean-going canoes, the prow and stern pieces are added last, the thwarts and seats are installed, and the exterior is finished. Then the canoe is given a name and is ready to begin its life on the water.

This small canoe was carved about 1930 from a single log by William Shelton.

Ocean-Going Canoe:

This canoe was made about 1880 as part of a wedding dowry. The canoe was built by the bride’s family from the Quinault Nation and given to the Tulalip groom is a wedding present.

Shown above is a detail of where the mast would have been placed. Sails, prior to the arrival of the Europeans, were made from woven mats.

Gardening Together as Families begins its second year

TULALIP, Wash.- The Hibulb Cultural Center’s Gardening Together as Families event was planned for Saturday April 13, 2013, rain or shine. Despite the cold and rainy weather, gardeners began arriving at ten am, dressed in rain gear and ready to garden. They made their way inside the Cultural Center where they enjoyed traditional prayers and songs prior to heading out to the garden and greenhouse.

In the garden’s raised planter boxes they replanted the starts from the green house. Cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli were all placed in the raised beds. Sugar snap peas were replanted in a raised bed and given an old crab pot to vine on. A spring mix variety of lettuce was replanted in a lettuce wall that looks like upside down stairs to maximize space and water. These cold weather plants are hardier to cold and some freezing temperatures. While the sweet peas and broccoli may produce all summer, cabbage, cauliflower and lettuce will need to be reseeded after they are done producing.

Early spring plants that are able to withstand the cooler temperatures were already thriving in the raised planter boxes. Master Gardener Michelle Taylor coerced me to try the fresh Kale that she tore from the stalk. Kale is surprisingly refreshing, sweet and tender; it is similar in taste to sweet peas. Michelle explained how Kale is an easy vegetable to grow in this area of Washington and is full of nutrients like Iron, fiber, calcium, Vitamins C, A and K. Kale is simple to cook with and prepare, it’s great in salad, soup, casserole, or in a smoothie.

Gardener Carol Kapua was enthralled when she saw the large artichoke that it was “so very healthy” and explained how the artichoke will grow and mature on the inside of the bushy plant. Artichoke is not usually grown in this wet climate and is a bit of a finicky perennial but is able to be grown as a low maintenance annual. The artichoke plant will need to be “overwintered” a term which means the plant will need to be cooled to a low temperature of 30 degrees in order to flower.

The next Gardening Together as Families event will be in May. All levels of experience are welcome and Gardeners do not need to bring any tools, although if you have your own garden gloves, knee pads etc. you are welcome to bring them. At the end of each Gardening Together as Families event a delicious and nutritious lunch is prepared by the Cultural Center staff.
