Shop for Native American holiday gifts at Tulalip

TULALIP, Wa- Tulalip’s  annual  Native  Bazaar  is  happening  this weekend, Nov 23rd  and 24th, and December 7th and 8th.  The bazaar is a great place to  buy  handmade gifts  for friends and  family and offers everything from cedar woven items art, carvings and drums, to jewelry, clothing and food.

The bazaar is open 9:00am – 4:00pm and is located  at  the Don Hatch Jr Youth Center, 6700 Totem Beach Rd, Tulalip. I-5 exit 199, follow the signs.

TULALIP − Coming to the MarysvilleSchool District, Dr. Becky Berg aimed to “hit the ground running,” according to the Marysville Globe. True to her word, Berg wastes no time when it comes to improving community schools. On November 14th, she and other district officials held a community meeting at the TulalipAdministrationBuilding, the first in a series of meetings, in order to identify concerns and provide information about this year’s levy.

“We want to hear from you all,” Berg said. “What are the concerns you have about your schools? What are some positive things or what would you like to see continued?”

Two breakout sessions, facilitated by Berg and assistant superintendent Ray Houser, were a forum where the community spoke on a personal level with district officials, discussing their past experiences attending Marysville schools or having children attend Marysville schools, what works in the district, changes that they’ve seen, improvements that need to be made, and programs they’d like to see developed. One major issue raised by parents and teachers at the meeting was the drastic educational gap in the classroom.

“We have high school math classes with students meeting and exceeding their level, mixed with students that are stuck at a 5th grade level,” said heritage principal Shelly Lacey.

Other topics discussed were programs that have been cut, including evening transportation after extra curricular activities like sports, band, clubs, etc., and problems with the schools’ environment such as bullying, apathetic staff, and teachers uninterested in whether or not students learned.

“We don’t feel welcome. Our kids feel unwelcome at school, and we as parents feel that we can’t approach the teachers,” said Misty Napeahi. She has children in school now, as well as graduates of the MarysvilleSchool District.

Many of these issues were addressed in the levy presentation that followed the discussions, which highlighted specific areas that need improvement. Line items included in the levy are programs for high achieving students, students needing to be brought up to grade level, transportation, teachers and aides, support staff (nurses, counselors, etc.), staff training and development, extra curricular activities, and upgrading district technology, each addressing various academic needs. Each of these items discussed, as well as dollar allocations, emphasized the levy as the means to helping every student to succeed. The support staff and staff development portions are crucial to changing the environment of Marysville schools, which is a constant concern at Tulalip.

Upgrading technology and accessibility may be the most crucial for academic success at the current time.

“We spent all the time, money, and effort to put in the fiber-optic network we have now, yet it remains inaccessible because of a lack of hardware,” said Jim Baker, the district’s executive director of finance. “With the proper tools and training, we hope to improve student performance in the classroom, as well as the effectiveness of the teachers.”

District officials stressed the need for the levy to pass in order to provide better resources in the classroom.

“As it stands, there is more advanced technology and capable users at McDonald’s than there is in our schools,” noted Berg.

This levy truly is all encompassing, addressing academic, structural, and environmental needs. If passed, the levy stands to increase funding for these programs by $85 million over the next four years. The issues discussed at this and other community meetings will be deciding factors in how the money is spent, specifically with regards to staff development. The next community meeting and levy presentation is slated for December 4th of this year, 6:00 pm at the district office. Also attend talks and book signings from Seattle Times reporter Lynda Mapes, whose book inspired the exhibit.

Schedule of Activities:

10:30-11:30 am: Roger Fernandes, storyteller and member of Lower Elwha of the Klallam Tribe, shares a  welcoming song and stories of the Lower Elwha.

11:30 am – 12:30 pm: Lynda Mapes, journalist, author of Elwha: A River Reborn, and close observer of the natural world will tell of writing her articles for the Seattle Times, which then lead  to the book and the exhibit. Lynda will also be available to sign copies of her book.

12:30-1:30 pm: The Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe’s river restoration director Robert Elofson offers his perspective on the history of the Elwha Dams and the ongoing restoration.

1:30-2:30 pm: The Elwha Drum Group,  made up of young and adult members of the Lower Elwha Tribe, will share songs and drumming in the Burke Room.

The largest run of Chinook salmon in decades returned to the Elwha River this fall, according to officials with the Olympic National Park.

PORT ANGELES, Wash. — The largest run of Chinook salmon in decades returned to the Elwha River this fall, according to officials with the Olympic National Park.

Fish are streaming into stretches of the Elwha River and its tributaries that were formerly blocked by the Elwha Dam, park officials said Friday on its website.

The Elwha Dam, one of two dams on the river, stood for nearly a century before it came down in 2012.

Removal of the remaining 210-foot tall Glines Canyon Dam resumed last month after nearly a year hold to give officials time to fix problems at new water-treatment facilities built as part of the $325 million river restoration project.

During a one-day survey in September, biologists counted 1,741 adult Chinook and mapped 763 reds between the remnants of the Glines Canyon Dam and the river mouth. About 75 percent of those were spotted upstream of the former Elwha Dam site, park officials said.

The biologists navigated over 13 miles of the Elwha River and tributaries, walking and snorkeling to find living and dead salmon along the river from Glines Canyon Dam to the river mouth. They also surveyed lower portions of three river tributaries, including Indian Creek, Hughes Creek, and Little River.

Results from the survey indicate this year’s Chinook return is one of the strongest since 1992, according to park officials.

Dam removal is scheduled to be complete in 2014.

With the two dams removed, the glacier-fed Elwha River is expected to flow freely as it courses from the Olympic Mountains to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Salmon and other fish that mature in the ocean and return to rivers to spawn will once again have access to more than 70 miles of spawning and rearing habitat, much of it within the protected boundaries of Olympic National Park.

Marysville YMCA hosts ‘Military Family Night’ Nov. 16

MARYSVILLE — The Marysville Family YMCA is extending Veterans Day into the weekend following Nov. 11, by hosting its “Military Family Night” from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, as part of the YMCA of Snohomish County’s “Military Family Month” in November.

Allison Hoot, youth and family coordinator for the Marysville Family YMCA, explained that the Y building will be open to military families only during those two hours, and that military identification will be required to enter.

“We’ll be hosting a sit-down dinner, where families will be waited on and pampered,” said Hoot, who touted the door prizes and other games offered by the event. “After dinner, the Y will be open for family swimming, dodgeball and basketball.”

Hoot added that area Girl Scouts will be providing crafts for families to do together as well, while community businesses have donated gift cards and baskets for door prizes.

“The Marysville, Arlington and Lake Stevens area houses so many service members, and a lot of those families have at least one parent deployed,” Hoot said. “This annual event gives all of our local military families time to enjoy just being together.”

“The Y encourages everyone to recognize the sacrifices that military members and their families make in service to our country,” said Scott Washburn, president and CEO of the YMCA of Snohomish County. “Residents of Snohomish County can also show support for military personnel by getting involved with their local YMCA or other organizations that help military families here in our community.”

Military Family Month was first established by the Armed Services YMCA and recognized by former First Lady Nancy Reagan in 1993, before President Barack Obama proclaimed November as Military Family Month on Oct. 30, 2009, calling on “all Americans to honor military families, through private actions and public service, for the tremendous contributions they make in the support of our service members and our nation.”

Closure scheduled for 88th St. railroad crossing Nov. 15-17

MARYSVILLE — A full closure is scheduled for the weekend of Nov. 15-17 for the railroad crossing at 88th Street NE, west of State Avenue, so that Burlington Northern Santa Fe can install improvements to address poor railway and road conditions.

The closure will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, and extend into Sunday, Nov. 17, until the work is completed.

Detour routes and variable message board signs will be placed along Interstate 5, advising motorists to use the State Route 528 (Fourth Street) or 116th Street freeway interchanges as alternate routes.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe will perform a full rehabilitation of the at-grade railroad crossing, according to city of Marysville Community Information Officer Doug Buell. The work will involve removing existing ties and track sections across 88th Street NE, and adding new pavement to create a more drivable surface.

During the closure, the westside crosswalk on State Avenue will be closed, but the other three will remain open. However, a railroad flagger will be present to direct pedestrians, when necessary, across the tracks on the south side of 88th Street NE, through a designated pedestrian detour route.

Recent National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship Honoree, Pauline Hillaire, Scälla–Of the Killer Whale, tradition-bearer for the Lummi People, has compiled a book about her father Joe Hillaire and Coast Salish traditions titled “A Totem Pole History: The Work of Lummi Carver Joe Hillaire”. Joseph Hillaire is recognized as one of the great Coast Salish artists, carvers, and tradition-bearers of the early twentieth century. In “A Totem Pole History”, Scälla, who is herself a well-known Coast Salish cultural historian and conservator, tells the story of her father’s life and about the traditional and contemporary Lummi narratives that inf1uenced his work.

“A Totem Pole History” contains seventy-six photographs, including Joe’s most significant totem poles. Scälla conveys with great insight the stories, teachings, and history expressed by her father’s totem poles.

Eight contributors provide essays on Coast Salish art and carving, adding to the author’s portrayal of Joe’s philosophy of art in Salish life, particularly in the context of twentieth century intercultural relations.

This engaging volume provides an historical record to encourage Native artists and brings the work of a respected Salish carver to the attention of a broader audience.

The companion media, Coast Salish Totem Poles, includes:

● 2 CD’s featuring Pauline Hillaire telling traditional stories associated with totem poles and Joe Hillaire singing Lummi songs.
●A DVD that features Pauline showing viewers how to interpret the stories and history expressed in Joe’s totem poles.

Lummi Carver and Smithsonian 2012 Featured Artist for the Living Earth Festival, Felix Solomon and NW Coast Native artist and pigment specialist Melonie Ancheta along with Editor Gregory Fields will talk about Coast Salish art history and artistic traditions. Traditional Lummi dancers, Children of the Setting Sun will perform and members of Pauline Hillaire’s family will read from the book.

Veterans and their families packed the Longhouse at the Hibulb Cultural Center & Natural History Preserve on Monday, November 11th. The event hosted by Hibulb staff, which was open to all veterans in the Tulalip community, featured a lunch incorporating traditional foods in addition to an honoring and healing ceremony. Veterans that spoke reminded those in attendance about the sacrifices made by soldiers and their families, emphasizing the importance of remembering the cost of the world we live in.

With the presentation of the colors by the Tulalip Honor Guard, the Veterans Day celebration began. Each veteran was thanked with a blanket, introducing themselves while taking a moment to speak about their service. Some listed their rank and various wars and theaters, while others spoke about what Veterans Day means to them.

“It’s important to remember the veterans and to thank them,” said Tulalip Chairman Mel Sheldon, a Vietnam veteran. He referred to the ill tempers and bad attitudes that Americans had towards the Vietnam War, and in turn, how poorly returning soldiers were treated. “Today is a day to honor the sacrifice made. When war came you raised your hand, and we thank you for your service.”

“It is important to remember the families and their sacrifice,” said veteran, David Ventura. “They had to sacrifice time with their sons and brothers, and many times a life shared. Mothers, fathers, wives, brothers and sisters all had to live with the uncertainty of someone they loved dearly, for the service they gave to this nation.”

Korean War veteran Ray Moses spoke about the horrors of war.

“When I was in Korea,” he began, “my brother was killed right along side me. That moment was the most helpless feeling I have ever experienced. I couldn’t cry; I couldn’t get mad. All I could do was keep fighting. I had to. The worst memories I have are about death.”

He paused a moment. “Why do I tell you these things? People these days say, ‘we don’t want to hear that, those old things.’ And I tell them, without those old things all these new things wouldn’t be here.”

Hibulb staff served a lunch of fry bread and hamburger stew, along with traditional foods including mushrooms, nettle tea, and black moss pudding, which in our culture is a medicine for calming the spirit and mind.

Tulalip, WA − “I’m surrounded by artists; artist wine makers, artist chefs, artist celebrity chefs. All of whom have such a lust, such passion for food,” said Chef Perry Mascitti at the opening reception for the 5th annual Taste of Tulalip, November 8th. The weekend culinary event, which sells out every year, hosted returning celebrity Chef Carla Hall, Bravo’s Top Chef Champion Kristen Kish, and renowned food anthropologist, chef, and Kiowa tribal member, Dr. Lois Frank. This year’s focus was more on the menu in an effort to redefine the event, and the Tulalip brand.

Lisa Severn, director of food and beverage at the resort, said, “It is a culinary event encompassing both food and wine. We want to define Tulalip as a culinary destination, bringing quality and passion to our brand, setting us apart from our competitors.”

The Taste, as it’s called, is so much more than a wine event, a fact that was brought to the forefront in this year’s preparations as Dr. Frank worked with resort cooking staff for more than six months developing menu ideas inspired by the historic foods of this region. Such indigenous foods were incorporated into each dish served at Friday’s six course reception dinner, as well as those offered at the grand tasting on Saturday. The use of indigenous mushrooms, huckleberries, salmon, shellfish, pumpkin and squash, and indigenous red and yellow corn gave each plate a taste that is truly unique to this region. Branching out into Indian country as a whole, even lamb and buffalo were used as Native meats.

Each year, the Taste welcomes mainly Washington wineries to showcase their finest products, for two reasons. First, these wines are specific to this area, similar to the foods, as each grape will taste different depending on the ground it is planted in. You are essentially drinking the flavors of the northwest infused in each wine. The second is that Tulalip Resort believes in buying local and supporting local businesses.

They have the food, they have the drink, but it is really the skill and passion that defines a culinary experience. In order to prove their skill, chefs and sommeliers from around the Pacific Northwest teamed up for the Rock n’ Roll cooking challenge, where they were given a basket of unknown ingredients. They had to create a dish and select a wine to pair it with. A challenge to understand the relationship between food and drink, three teams were judged by the hosting chefs.

In addition to the fanfare, cooking demonstrations and tastings of elite wines and craft beers brought a level of quality to the Taste that puts Tulalips on the map. Kristen Kish held a cooking demonstration, preparing lobster. Kish stressed the fact that you should cook with your hands. For example, a pinch as a measurement should be between your thumb and three fingers, meaning that the amount of ingredients used will be specific to each chef, adding an identity to each dish. Fielding questions by Tulalip’s Chef Perry and celebrity Chef Carla Hall, Kish shared other tricks of the trade along the way.

The effort in defining the Taste as a culinary experience is exceptional, even in philanthropy. The Taste sponsors a charity each year. This year Fare Start was selected, a charity that assists at risk adults with culinary training. Every aspect of the Taste goes towards an emphasis on the culinary experience.

Redefining the Taste, and Tulalip, as a culinary destination also showcases the diverse options Tulalip offers guests on a regular basis. Although the event focuses on Tulalip hospitality, the Taste of Tulalip has remained one of the top ten grossing weekends in terms of casino revenue since the resort opened.

The weekend concluded with what was called a Native American brunch, where Dr. Frank led an expedition into the traditional foods of Native America; a legacy that will continue at the resort.

Severn was very pleased with the event, saying, “It was a successful weekend that defined Tulalip as a culinary destination, hosting the premier culinary event in the Northwest.”
